The OCEANS ’16 Ice Breaker Reception will take place at Custom House Plaza on Monday, September 19th, evening.  Custom House Plaza is adjacent to the Portola Hotel and is bordered by several historic buildings, including the Custom House.  Built circa 1821 by the Mexican government, the Custom House is California’s first historic landmark and its oldest public building.  It is where the first American Flag was raised on July 7, 1846, declaring California part of the United States.

Custom House Plaza affords views of Monterey Bay, sailboats in Monterey Harbor, and Fisherman’s Wharf, which is just a short stroll away.  The Wharf is home to a number of terrific restaurants –but don’t head there just yet!  Enjoy the Ice Breaker’s tasty Mexican-themed reception eats.  The outdoor space will also allow delegates to enjoy Monterey’s spectacular fall weather – this time of year is the sunniest and one of the best times to visit!

IEEE OES President Rene Garello and MTS President Ray Toll will join the Reception festivities. In addition to the Ice Breaker Reception, Custom House Plaza will be home to several technology showcases throughout OCEANS ’16.  The OceanGate Foundation will exhibit Cyclops, its 500-meter rated submersible (stop by to sign up for an in depth view!), while SailDrone will display a member of its fleet of ocean data-collecting sailing drones.  Santa Clara University’s Mobile Maker Lab will also be parked there, showcasing its 3D printers, laser cutter, and variety of other tools and inviting local school groups to visit.  Make sure to take some time to visit these outdoor exhibits!
